Rosie asked me in an earlier comment if I’d seen any good mosaics during my travels. This one’s for you, m’dear.

Since Hagia Sophia was first built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century, it has been both a church and a mosque, and since November 24, 1934, when Attaturk (founder of the Turkish Republic) signed a decree of transformation, it’s been called the Ayasofya Museum (Saint Sophia).

The ancient basilica and its dome, which is 55 meters high, house many decorative pieces, the most impressive of which are the Byzantine mosaics dotted throughout the building. Currently, there’s an exhibition showing the work of Sitki Olçar, which includes copies of the original artwork that can be seen inside the church.

I’m afraid to say that the immense size and grandeur of the museum does not come across in my photographs. It’s big, huge, massive. I was gob-smacked. Have little time now as rushing for bus to Bulgaria but will post more pics here and on Flickr.com when I can.
